SHORTLIST MEDIA

16 out of 25: Good

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: 4/5

  • Scope for writing (print), although only strap-line content, which was heavily edited.
  • A lot of researching opportunities
  • Very transcription heavy – good experience.
  • Great insight into a successful company, which works as a single entity to create a great magazine.
  • A great attentive and caring approach from the relevant editors, leading to range of categories being covered, from music to books, interviews to big features.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: 4/5

  • Kind, friendly and inclusive team. Great office environment and atmosphere.
  • Hard working environment, leading to a great magazine. Very gender-oriented (Shortlist having a high majority of males; Stylist of women), which is clearly relevant.

FEEDBACK OPPORTUNITY: 4/5

  • Feedback was slightly thin on the ground, while working.
  • Advice and help given by editors at the end (over a friendly beer) about pursuing career in journalism.

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES: 1/5

  • None. The time here was solely experience based, which was clear in the application.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: 3/5

  • Travel and food expenses covered.

SQUARE UP MEDIA

12 out of 25: AVERAGE

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: 2/5

  • A lot of scope for writing (digital and print).
  • Good insight into the running of a small company establishing itself in print.
  • Badly organised and seemingly little communication between colleagues and senior staff. 1 month of interning was organised and when I arrived on the Monday of week three I was told not to come back in because they had too many interns in and not enough desk space for me.
  • When I requested PDFs of my work I was told that a lot of my pieces were not used in the end. However, upon seeing the printed issue of the magazine this was not the case. In fact a great deal of the issues repeat features were written by me. This has still not been recognised.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: 3/5

  • Kind, friendly and inclusive team. Great office environment and atmosphere.
  • I was very let down when I was turned away on my third week. The associate editor was exceptionally apologetic as were the editors.

FEEDBACK OPPORTUNITY: 4/5

  • Feedback given regularly, along side constructive criticism.
  • Advice and help given by associate editor about pursuing career in journalism.

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES: 1/5

  • Again, future opportunities were destroyed when I was turned down so quickly and without premise.
  • The company is small and there is little chance of progression, as they do not have much money or many room for growth.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: 2/5

  • Travel expenses covered only.
